A 55-year-old truck driver was killed early Monday in a crash that impacted more than a dozen vehicles on the eastbound Pomona (60) Freeway at Diamond Bar Boulevard.
Norris R. Whittington Sr. of Bellflower was behind the wheel of a flatbed tractor-trailer and apparently swerved right to avoid a slow-moving vehicle about 1:10 a.m., setting off a chain of events that would claim his life and impact multiple other motorists, according to Rodrigo Jimenez of the California Highway Patrol.
A piece of heavy equipment fell off the truck and onto the freeway and hydraulic fluid spewed out, leaving a 200-foot trail. In total, 15 vehicles would fall victim to the debris, with one driver and a passenger saying they were in pain, but declining to be taken to hospital, authorities said.
The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert around 1:40 a.m., lasting until about 7 a.m.
Neither drugs nor alcohol were suspected to have played a role in the crash, according to the CHP, which asked anyone with additional information to contact Officers Sergio Garcia or Jonathan Contreras at the CHP Baldwin Park office at 626-338-1164.
