Police arrested a 38-year-old man for allegedly committing an assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, officials said Tuesday.

The incident took place around 6:50 p.m. Sunday near the Los Angeles Police Department’s Metropolitan station in the 2700 block of Temple Street, police said.

According to the department, a police sergeant was leaving the parking lot on Benton Way in an unmarked police SUV when the suspect, Elvis Ayala, threw a glass jar candle at the sergeant’s windshield. After it hit the windshield, the sergeant stopped and saw the suspect run into an apartment. Police then set up a perimeter and eventually took Ayala into custody.

He was being held without bail due to a parole hold, the LAPD reported.

Ayala is also a suspect in another incident that occurred on Aug. 20, the LAPD said. In that case Ayala allegedly threw a metal candlestick at a large SWAT vehicle, slightly damaging the truck.

Anyone with information about Ayala was asked to call the LAPD at 213-486-7280 or 877-527-3247. Tipsters can also call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
