A man suspected of firing upon a California Highway Patrol officer responding to a stolen vehicle call in Sylmar was in custody Tuesday morning after a sheriff’s SWAT team responded to the scene.
The sheriff’s department reported just after midnight that the man was in custody.
The shots were reported at 8:21 p.m. Monday in the 12900 block of Little Tujunga Canyon Road, according to CHP Officer Tony Polizzi. Officers had been called to the scene at 7:12 p.m.
The officer was not hit, and several officers were at the scene, he said.
A sheriff’s helicopter also responded, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department said, urging civilians to stay out of the area.
A sheriff’s SWAT team surrounded the suspect and negotiators worked to resolve the situation peacefully, said Deputy Eric Ortiz of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.
CBSLA reported the suspect was getting in and out of CHP patrol cars that were abandoned when he opened fire on them, adding officers had not returned fire.
FOX11 reported the officers were conducting a stolen vehicle investigation at the time the shots were fired.
