An unidentified powdery substance discovered in a Riverside hotel room Thursday made a housekeeper ill and prompted a hazardous materials team to investigate.
The unknown material was found at 4:30 p.m. in a room on one of the upper floors of the Hampton Inn & Suites, 4250 Riverwalk Parkway, according to the Riverside Police Department.
Officer Ryan Railsback told City News Service that the white powdery substance bore telltale signs of being illegal narcotics, but that could not be confirmed.
“The employee entered the room, apparently was exposed to the substance, then left,” Railsback said. “They went to the lobby and reported feeling ill.”
Riverside Fire Department and Riverside County Department of Environmental Health personnel were sent to investigate.
Rooms on the floor were reportedly evacuated, but not the hotel.
The ill employee was examined at the scene by paramedics and taken to a hospital for further evaluation.
As of 6:45 p.m., a hazardous materials team was at the scene, preparing to conduct a cleanup operation. Police technicians were also involved.
