A man suspected of setting fire to El Monte duplexes was hospitalized Saturday with stab wounds to his chest believed self-inflicted.
The fire was reported at about noon at 4445 N. Bannister Ave., according to El Monte police Lt. Chris Cano.
Firefighters who put out the blaze found the wounded man, who was taken to a hospital for treatment, Cano said. He will be held for mental health evaluation, the lieutenant said.
There were three duplexes on the property and at least two of them burned, with an estimated loss of $500,000, he said.
El Monte detectives and Los Angeles County Fire Department arson investigators were working to confirm whether the wounded man set the fires, Cano said.
