At least one Riverside County sheriff’s deputy fatally shot a man armed with an unspecified weapon Thursday at La Quinta City Hall.

Deputies were sent about 1:25 p.m. to La Quinta City Hall at 78495 Calle Tampico to a report of a man with a gun in the courtyard, according to Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. Lionel Murphy.

Soon after arriving, deputies located the armed man and shot him, according to the department, although additional information about the encounter was not provided.

The department reported that deputies found a weapon at the scene, but did not specify if it was a gun.

No deputies were injured.

It was not immediately clear if the man, who was not identified, approached the deputies with the weapon.

The suspect was taken to a hospital and later died.

The fatal shooting was the third involving a Riverside County sheriff’s deputy in the Coachella Valley since June.

Jeffery Monroy, 33, of Cathedral City was fatally wounded Aug. 7 after authorities say he attacked a deputy with a screwdriver in the 70000 block of Tamarisk Lane in Rancho Mirage.
