A big rig and an SUV collided near the entrance to Riverside National Cemetery Wednesday, killing one driver and injuring the other.

The collision happened about 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of Meridian Parkway and Van Buren Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The circumstances behind the crash were under investigation, but according to the CHP, the two vehicles impacted at unknown speeds, and the tractor-trailer jackknifed.

One of the drivers — the CHP could not immediately confirm which — was ejected onto the roadway. Riverside Fire Department paramedics arrived minutes later and pronounced him dead at the scene.

The other victim suffered minor injuries and was taken to Riverside Community Hospital for treatment, according to the CHP.

The big rig sustained major damage and spilled some of its load onto Van Buren, and the four-lane corridor was closed between Opportunity Way and Meridian while the semi was removed and the area was cleaned up, which took about three hours.
