A man was fatally injured during an attack in Moreno Valley Wednesday, but the circumstances were unclear, and the assailant remained at large.

The victim, whose identity was not immediately released, drove to the 22000 block of Alessandro Boulevard, near Day Street, where he got out of his car and collapsed about 1 a.m., according to Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. Lionel Murphy.

He said a witness called 911, and patrol deputies reached the location within a few minutes.

A deputy initiated life-saving measures, followed by Cal Fire paramedics. However, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later, Murphy said.

Central Homicide Unit detectives opened an investigation, but no details have been released, including a possible motive or cause of death, with sheriff’s officials saying only that it was intentional.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the Central Homicide Unit at 951-955-2777.
