A 21-year-old unlicensed and allegedly impaired driver accused of plowing through a red light at a Moreno Valley intersection, triggering a collision that seriously injuring one of the two occupants of the other vehicle, was being held Wednesday in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Marco Antonio Fonseca of Hemet was booked Tuesday into the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside on suspicion of driving under the influence resulting in great bodily injury and operating a motor vehicle without a license.

According to Riverside County sheriff’s officials, Fonseca was going south on Day Street in a Nissan sedan — traveling well over the speed limit — when he allegedly blew through a red traffic light and crossed Cottonwood Avenue about 7 p.m. Tuesday.

A four-door BMW was going through the intersection, westbound on Cottonwood, on a green light and was hit by the Nissan, investigators said.

“The collision caused the front seat passenger of the BMW to be ejected, resulting in major injuries,” according to a sheriff’s statement. “The BMW’s driver sustained moderate injuries.”

The victims were taken to nearby Riverside University Medical Center for treatment.

Fonseca was unhurt and was taken into custody without incident.
