The Los Angeles Police Department will conduct DUI checkpoints Friday and Saturday nights in an attempt to deter impaired driving.

The checkpoints will be conducted from 6-11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The locations were selected on a history of DUI crashes and arrests.

“The primary purpose of checkpoints is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired,” the department said.

LAPD reminded the public that impaired driving can happen while under the influence of marijuana or prescription medications, not only alcohol.

“Always follow directions for use and read warning labels about driving or `operating heavy machinery,’ which includes driving a car,” the department said.

The checkpoints will take place at the following locations:

Friday

–Manchester Avenue and Figueroa Street, South Los Angeles

–Lincoln Boulevard and Maxella Avenue, Marina Del Rey

Saturday

–Sepulveda Boulevard and Rayen Street, North Hills

–Western Avenue and 39th Street, South Los Angeles

–Western Avenue and Venice Boulevard, Harvard Heights
