A man died Sunday evening when he was struck by a hit-and-run vehicle while crossing a Huntington Beach street, then struck by a second vehicle whose driver remained at the scene.
The initial crash occurred about 7:15 p.m. on southbound Goldenwest Street north of Oxford Drive, according to Huntington Beach police Lt. Brian Smith.
“Based upon the preliminary investigation, it appears the victim was crossing Goldenwest Street outside of a marked crosswalk when he was struck by a black SUV,” Smith said. “The vehicle failed to stop at the scene and was last seen traveling westbound on Oxford Drive from Goldenwest Street, with significant damage to its front end and windshield.”
People stopped to render aid to the injured pedestrian but paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene, he said.
The man’s name was withheld pending notification of relatives.
Anyone who saw the crash was asked to call Huntington Beach police Traffic Investigator D. Demetre at 714-536-5670 or Investigator V. Rattanchandani at 714-536-5663.
