A 52-year-old man shot and killed in Sherman Oaks before sunrise was identified Friday.
The shooting was reported about 5:30 a.m. Thursday in the 12900 block of Hesby Street, near Magnolia Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The fatally injured man, identified by the coroner’s office Friday as Almando Martinez, was found lying in the street suffering gunshot wounds outside a vehicle that had crashed into a tree, police said. Martinez died at the scene.
The suspect, 39-year-old Ethan Grant, of Sherman Oaks, told police “the decedent had brandished a gun at him which caused him to shoot the decedent,” LAPD said.
Surveillance footage from the area showed the victim driving “at a very slow speed” before being approached by Grant.
“(T)hen a shooting occurred that was not captured on video,” according to police.
Investigators recovered two handguns from the scene.
Grant was arrested Thursday on suspicion of murder, police said.
According to Fox11, a man described as the son of a homeowner told police he shot “a possible burglary suspect or auto thief” who was armed with a gun.
The department urged anyone with information on the shooting to call Detective Steve Castro at 818-374-1925.
