Additional police officers will be deployed in Indio Friday evening, looking for motorists driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The Indio Police Department did not disclose any planned checkpoints, but said the increased patrols set for the city will begin at 8 p.m. and end at 2 a.m. Saturday.
Police warned that despite its recreational legality, marijuana could also lead to a DUI, especially in combination with alcohol or other drugs.
Anyone arrested for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol could spend time in jail and pay up to $13,500, including fines, fees, classes, license suspensions and other expenses.
Funding for the patrols is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
