A 44-year-old inmate from Los Angeles was fatally injured during an apparent altercation in his cell at Ironwood State Prison in Blythe, officials said Tuesday.
Henry Reyes died Monday from injuries suffered two days earlier, according to the California Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation.
Officials said prison guards were dispatched to Reyes’ cell on Saturday and found him unconscious and bleeding.
The convicted felon’s cell mate, whose identity was not released, was immediately taken into custody on suspicion of assault and placed in isolation, according to CDCR.
According to the agency, Reyes was taken to a Riverside County hospital, where he lingered in intensive care until he died from his injuries, which were not described.
No weapons were found in the cell, and a possible motive for the alleged assault was not disclosed.
Reyes had been incarcerated since July 2014 after he was convicted in Los Angeles County for first-degree murder, attempted murder and making criminal threats, according to CDCR.
The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office is assisting prison authorities with the investigation.
