Santa Ana police Wednesday were investigating the fatal shooting of a 34-year-old man outside an illegal gambling business.
The victim, whose name was not immediately released, was standing outside the business at 328 N. Harbor Blvd. on Tuesday night when he was shot, said Cpl. Anthony Bertagna of the Santa Ana Police Department.
The victim staggered for about a block and collapsed in front of the Cozy Corner Drive-In restaurant at 426 N. Harbor Blvd., Bertagna said. The man was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead, Bertagna said.
Police were called just before 11 p.m. Tuesday and found the victim in front of the restaurant, Bertagna said.
He had been in the gambling establishment so police were questioning about 50 people who were inside at the time of the shooting, Bertagna said.
It was the sixth homicide in the city so far this year, with three of them involving illegal gambling businesses, Bertagna said. At this point last year there were three homicides total, he added.
Anyone who has information helpful to detectives was asked to call 714-345-8390. Orange County Crime Stoppers will accept anonymous tips at (855) TIP-OCCS.
