One suspect was shot and critically wounded by Riverside police officers at a strip mall near the UC Riverside campus and a second suspect suffered a minor injury during the incident and was also taken into custody, authorities said Monday.
The shooting occurred at 11:59 p.m. Sunday at 3839 Chicago Ave., said Riverside police Lt. B. Crawford.
Crawford said the driver of a car was wounded and the vehicle crashed into a police car and parked cars at an Enterprise car rental agency.
Two officers suffered minor injuries, with one treated at a hospital and released and the other treated by paramedics at the scene, Crawford said.
Riverside police Officer Ryan Railsback told Fox11 that the officers were on patrol “when they contacted a suspicious vehicle parked and it had two occupants inside.”
“During that contact, an officer-involved shooting occurred,” Railsback said. “The two officers sustained minor injuries.”
One suspect was shot and taken to a hospital, and the other suspect suffered unspecified minor injuries and also was taken to a hospital, Railsback said. Their names were not immediately available.
Other police officers were on an unrelated shooting call in the area when they heard the gunfire, and they responded to the scene of the officer-involved shooting, Railsback said.
An investigation was underway by the Riverside County District Attorney’s office, Railsback said.
