The coroner’s office released the names of those killed Friday after a pickup chased by Garden Grove police crashed into another vehicle and ended up in a residential swimming pool.
Sal Fernandez, 34, and Joseph Mendoza, 28, were killed inside the pickup truck, according to Supervising Deputy Orange County Coroner T. Martinez.
Michael Clugston, 39, of Anaheim died at UC Irvine Medical Center after the pickup crashed into his vehicle and caused it to roll over into a wall.
The chain of events started about 2:15 a.m. when officers saw a Dodge Ram pickup moving “at a high rate of speed” through a parking lot at Harbor Boulevard and onto Chapman Avenue, said Garden Grove police Lt. Mario Martinez.
Police turned on their lights and pursued the vehicle as it traveled westbound on Chapman Avenue, but Martinez said, “The truck continued driving at a high rate of speed when it was involved in a traffic collision with another passenger vehicle at the intersection of Euclid Street and Orangewood Avenue… As a result of the collision, the truck hit a block wall and came to rest upside down in a residential swimming pool.”
The Orange County Fire Authority responded to render aid, but one person inside the truck was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other was found dead after the truck was fished out of the swimming pool at about 11:30 a.m., police said.
The coroner’s office did not specify which of the men was driving the truck.
