A pedestrian who was walking in the traffic lanes on the westbound Santa Monica (10) Freeway in downtown Los Angeles was fatally struck by at least one vehicle.
The crash was reported at about 10:45 p.m. Friday near the Los Angeles Street off-ramp, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The CHP received calls that multiple vehicles hit the victim. CHP units responded to the scene and found a man lying on the freeway.
The man was initially hit by a vehicle driven by 22-year-old Samuel Nunez from Los Angeles who remained at the scene, the CHP reported. Nunez, who was driving a 2001 Ford Escort, was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. He was being held in lieu of $2 million bail, according to jail records. No court information was immediately available.
The victim died at the scene. His name will not be disclosed until a family notification has been made, the CHP said.
No explanation was given for why the man was walking on the freeway. Anyone with information about the death was asked to call CHP Officer D. Kuo at 213-744-2331.
