A 35-year-old knife-wielding man has been sentenced to two years in prison for a racially charged attack at the Huntington Beach Pier, according to court records obtained Tuesday.

Casey John Roberts pleaded guilty Feb. 24 to one felony count of assault with a deadly weapon and two counts of violation of civil rights with violent injury and one count of criminal threats — and admitted hate crime sentencing enhancements.

Roberts inserted himself into an already brewing racially charged dispute between the victim and another group of people just before 8 p.m. Jan. 6, Huntington Beach Police Department Lt. Brian Smith said.

Roberts, who is white, was not involved in the initial dispute, but ran over to the victim and used an ethnic slur while wielding a knife, Smith said. The victim is Latino, but Roberts used a slur against another ethnicity, Smith said.

Roberts attempted to run from police but was taken into custody quickly without incident, Smith said.
