A man found shot to death near a rural road in the unincorporated Mount Baldy area north of Claremont was publicly identified Monday.

He was Gerald Purdue, 63, and his city of residence was not available, according to the coroner’s office.

Purdue was found about 1:45 p.m Thursday at Mile Marker 3.09 Mount Baldy Road in a culvert about 60 yards off the road, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The victim had a gunshot to the upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene. His vehicle was recovered nearby, the department said.
