Authorities Sunday continued to investigate a hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian in Hemet.

It happened at about 3:15 a.m. Saturday on Sanderson Avenue near Fruitvale Avenue, according to the Hemet Police Department.

Police said a woman in her mid-to-late 30s was crossing or standing in the roadway when she was struck by a brown or tan sedan driven by an unidentified woman.

When first responders arrived at the scene, they performed life-saving measures on the woman, but she later died at a hospital.

Officers searched the area for the suspect vehicle but came up empty.

“Traffic investigators are following up on leads and obtaining video from a nearby gas station which may help identify the suspect and the vehicle,” Sgt. Dan Reinbolt said.

Police said that about 30 minutes before the crash, officers had responded to a call of a woman seen jumping out into traffic on Kirby Street, about one block east of where the crash happened. The caller reported almost striking the woman after she jumped or ran into the roadway.

“Officers responded, but could not find the female. It is likely that female is the same person who was struck and killed in the traffic collision,” Reinbolt said.
