A Riverside police officer fired a shot while trying to arrest a parolee who was allegedly attempting to escape, but no one was injured, department officials reported Tuesday.
The shooting occurred about 3:30 a.m. Monday in the 2600 block of Alessandro Boulevard, near Trautwein Road, according to the Riverside Police Department.
Officer Ryan Railsback said the patrolman was called to a gas station after customers and employees complained that 28-year-old Edgar Bejarano of Moreno Valley was harassing them.
“The officer located the suspect,” Railsback said. “As the officer attempted to contact Mr. Bejarano, he ran away to a Ford F-150 pickup. Bejarano fought with the officer as he was trying to flee in the truck, when an officer-involved shooting occurred.”
The bullet did not strike the felon, who was wrestled into custody with the help of backup officers moments later, according to Railsback.
He said the officer who opened fire suffered minor injuries in the scuffle and was treated at Riverside Community Hospital, after which he was sent home.
Bejarano was booked into the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside on suspicion of obstruction of a peace officer, possession of a stolen vehicle, assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer, being under the influence of a controlled substance and parole violations.
He’s being held without bail.
The officer, whose identity was not disclosed, is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation, which is being handled by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, per city policy whenever an officer-involved shooting occurs.
Information on Bejarano’s background was not available.
