A person jumped off an overpass to his or her death in Santa Monica Thursday and authorities closed all lanes of the westbound Santa Monica (10) Freeway for three hours resulting in a massive traffic backup, police reported.
The fatality was reported just before 2 p.m. at the Fourth Street exit of the westbound 10 Freeway, according to the Santa Monica Police Department. The person was pronounced dead at the scene.
The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert as all lanes of the westbound Santa Monica Freeway at Lincoln Boulevard were blocked for the investigation and body retrieval. Caltrans announced about 4:40 p.m. that all lanes were reopened to traffic.
