Riverside police Friday asked for the public’s assistance in identifying the person who fatally shot a 26-year-old man near his house.

Ricardo Nunez was severely wounded just a couple of blocks north of Riverside Municipal Airport.

According to Riverside police Officer Javier Cabrera, about 6:40 p.m. on May 2, Nunez was confronted by an unknown gunman as the victim drove his FJ Cruiser through the area of Dewey Avenue and Rexford Drive.

The shooter opened fire, hitting Nunez in one of his legs, though he managed to drive his vehicle another block and park it in the garage of his house in the 6100 block of Dewey.

Witnesses called 911, and officers swarmed the area, but the shooter could not be located, Cabrera said.

He said Nunez was taken to Riverside Community Hospital, where he lingered on life support for two days before succumbing to the gunshot wound.

Detectives have been unable to develop productive leads in the case and are asking anyone with information to come forward. The Robbery-Homicide Unit can be reached at 951-353-7213. Those who prefer to remain anonymous may also submit details via rpdtips@riversideca.gov.
