A man was shot by police in Baldwin Park after he pulled a gun on officers during a traffic stop and was hospitalized Saturday morning with stable vital signs.

The shooting occurred at 9:20 p.m. Friday in the 4700 block of Phelan Avenue, south of Olive Street, according to Deputy Armando Viera of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which was assisting Baldwin Park police with an investigation.

Officers conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle during which one of the passengers got out of the vehicle and pointed a gun at officers, prompting police to shoot the gunman, Viera said.

The suspect, a man in his 20s, was struck by gunfire several times and taken to a hospital where he was listed with stable vital signs, said Viera, who added the suspect’s gun was recovered at the scene.

The name of the suspect was not disclosed.

No officers were injured.
