Two barbers were in critical condition Sunday in Riverside after being stabbed in a life-and-death struggle with an attacker who was finally killed by one of the barbers who retrieved a gun and killed the assailant, police reported.

There was no word yet from authorities of a possible motive in the violent confrontation about 6:40 p.m. Friday at Carlos Barber Shop at 3470 La Sierra Ave.

The Riverside County coroner’s office identified the dead suspect as Joseph Jimenez, 33, of Riverside.

Police said Jimenez entered the shop and began an altercation before stabbing a male barber.

When a second male barber intervened, he was stabbed as well before retrieving a gun and shooting Jimenez, according to police.

Jimenez was taken to Riverside Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:27 p.m., the coroner’s office said.
