Whittier police fatally shot a man Friday who authorities said pulled a gun from his pocket when an officer contacted him.

Officers responded at about 12:10 p.m. to the Whittier Dog Park on Philadelphia Street north of Whittier Boulevard on reports of a man armed with a gun, according to a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department statement.

The man fled by the time officers arrived at the scene, but they made a radio broadcast of his description as well as the last direction he was seen traveling in.

An officer located the man on the Whittier Greenway Trail bike path near Mar Vista Street and Whittier Boulevard and attempted to make contact with the him, authorities said.

The man allegedly pulled a gun from his pocket when the officer contacted him, and the officer shot him, authorities said.

Los Angeles County Fire Department units responded to the scene and pronounced the man dead. His name will be withheld pending notification of next of kin.

In addition to the Sheriff’s Department investigation, the fatal shooting will be investigated by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office shooting team.
