The coroner’s office Sunday released the name of a security guard killed when a hit-and-run driver slammed an SUV into a guard station at the Cabrillo apartment complex in Long Beach.

Derrick Smith was 54-years-old. His city of residence was not available.

The crash happened about 3 p.m. Saturday at the Century Villages at Cabrillo apartment complex in the 2000 block of San Gabriel Avenue, according to Long Beach police Lt. Scott Jenson.

The crash destroyed the station and killed the guard now identified as Smith, Jenson said. The driver then fled on foot.

Police searched for the driver, and were looking at security footage and talking to witnesses to try to identify the driver.

“You cannot tell which part is which,” Andria Abbott Mitchell told CBS2. “There’s chairs over here and a body over there, like you hit him like that?”

The complex caters to veterans and people who used to be homeless, the station reported.
