A motorcyclist killed in a crash on a freeway transition bridge near downtown Riverside was identified Monday as a 31-year-old resident of the city.

Derek Escarcega died about 4:45 p.m. Sunday on the eastbound Pomona (60) Freeway connector to the westbound Riverside (91) Freeway.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Escarcega was ejected into lanes after his motorcycle went down while traveling at an unknown speed.

It was unclear what triggered the crash.

Motorists stopped to help and called 911, and Riverside Fire Department paramedics reached the location within 10 minutes, at which time the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The connector bridge was shut down for almost two hours while the CHP conducted an investigation, which is ongoing.
