Several sheriff’s deputies investigating a disturbance near Desert Hot Springs were surrounded by a group of bystanders Friday, spurring a heavy law enforcement presence in the area as a precaution.
Deputies were sent to the 16000 block of Avenida Descanso about 2:30 p.m. on a public disturbance call, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
Sgt. Lionel Murphy said multiple people at a house were in the midst of a disagreement when deputies arrived. During the investigation, deputies detained one of the people when “he became uncooperative,” Murphy said.
“At that time, others who were present began surrounding the deputies. As a precaution, deputies requested other units respond for assistance,” the sergeant said.
It was not immediately clear whether anybody was injured or arrested. The size of the group and specifics about the altercation, were unclear.
Murphy said the scene was “stabilized” after additional deputies arrived.
The area is near the border of the incorporated city of Desert Hot Springs, which has its own police department. Sheriff’s deputies are responsible for patrolling the nearby unincorporated areas.
