Felony charges are expected to be filed Wednesday against a young man suspected of fatally shooting a 23-year-old Jurupa Valley resident behind a Riverside apartment complex amid an argument that broke out between the two.
Luis Angel Sanchez, 19, of Riverside was arrested Saturday and booked on suspicion of murder and assault resulting in death in connection with the slaying of Raul Hernandez Ramirez.
Sanchez is being held in lieu of $1 million bail at the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning while the case is under review at the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office.
About 12:30 a.m. Saturday, Sanchez and Ramirez were behind an apartment complex in the 5400 block of Olivewood Avenue, near Bandini Avenue, when they got into an argument for unspecified reasons, according to Riverside police Officer Javier Cabrera.
As the exchange escalated, Sanchez allegedly “produced a handgun and fatally shot the victim,” then fled as witnesses called 911 to report the gunfire, Cabrera said.
Paramedics pronounced Ramirez dead at the scene.
Homicide detectives developed leads within hours pointing to Sanchez as the alleged gunman, according to Cabrera. He was taken into custody without incident that afternoon at a nearby residence.
The relationship between the suspect and victim, if any, was not disclosed, nor were any further details regarding a possible motive.
