A man was fatally wounded and another man — believed to be an unintended target — was expected to survive a wound suffered during a shooting Saturday in downtown Long Beach, authorities said.
Officers dispatched about 1:20 a.m. to Broadway and Pine Avenue regarding a shooting came upon an off-duty nurse giving aid to a man with gunshot wounds to his upper body, said Arantxa Chavarria, public information officer for the Long Beach Police Department.
Paramedics took him to an area hospital, where he later died from his injuries, Chavarria said. He was later identified as Javante Fearance, 36, of Long Beach.
Officers also contacted a second shooting victim with a non-life-threatening wound to his upper body. He was treated and later released from an area hospital, she said.
“A preliminary investigation revealed one of the victims and a suspect had been involved in a verbal dispute, which escalated to a shooting,” she said.
The suspect fled on foot northbound on Pine Avenue.
Long Beach police homicide detectives urged anyone with information regarding the shooting to call them at 562-570-7244 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
