A man was fatally wounded and another man was expected to survive a gunshot wound suffered during a shooting Saturday in downtown Long Beach, authorities said.

Officers dispatched about 1:20 a.m. to Broadway and Pine Avenue regarding a shooting came upon a person giving aid to a man with gunshot wounds to his upper body, said Arantxa Chavarria, public information officer for the Long Beach Police Department.

Paramedics took him to an area hospital, where he later died from his injuries, Chavarria said. The suspect was described as a male adult.

Officers also contacted a second shooting victim with a non-life-threatening wound to his upper body, she said.

“A preliminary investigation revealed one of the victims and a suspect had been involved in a verbal dispute, which escalated to a shooting,” she said.

The motive for the shooting was unknown, Chavarria said.
