A 52-year-old man was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of killing a Coachella resident.
Gabriel Ramirez of Coachella was booked into the John Benoit Detention Center in Indio on suspicion of murder, where he was held without bail.
Deputies responded at 8:43 p.m. Tuesday to the area of Fifth Street and Vine Avenue to an assault with a deadly weapon call, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputies found Jimmy Meza, 46, suffering from life-threatening injuries. Meza later died, the sheriff’s department reported.
Ramirez was arrested at the scene with a machete in his hand, according to officials, who did not specify whether the machete was the suspected murder weapon.
The motive for the killing was not provided.
Ramirez’s criminal history, if any, was not immediately clear. He is expected to appear at the Larson Justice Center in Indio as soon as Friday, jail records show.
