A 31-year-old man was behind bars Thursday on suspicion of forcefully stealing a car in Palm Desert.

Colton Gibbs was arrested Wednesday when the Palm Desert Station Burglary Suppression Unit found the stolen vehicle in the 11000 block of Ocotillo Road in Desert Hot Springs, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

According to officials, the carjacking occurred on Tuesday when Gibbs allegedly brandished a replica firearm and forcefully removed the motorist from the vehicle in the 75000 block of Sheryl Avenue.

Deputies later tracked the vehicle down and detained Gibbs and an unidentified female seen placing items inside the stolen vehicle, according to Sgt. Christopher Ternes. They located the replica weapon while searching the vehicle.

Gibbs was booked into the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning on $80,000 bail and was scheduled to make his initial court appearance on Friday at the Larson Justice Center in Indio.
