The Desert Hot Springs Police Department announced Monday that it will increase traffic enforcement over the next year thanks in part to a $94,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
The grant provides the department extra funds needed to better deter dangerous and illegal driving behaviors that increase the risk of crashes, the department said.
“Impairment, speeding and other dangerous driving behaviors jeopardize the safety of other people on the road,” Chief Jim Henson said. “This funding allows us to provide necessary traffic enforcement measures with the goal of reducing serious injury and fatal crashes on our roads.”
According to the police department, the grant will assist in the increased enforcement of DUI checkpoints, driver behavior that puts bikers and pedestrians at risk and driving violations that lead to crashes, such as failure to yield and not stopping at red-lights.
The grant will also allow the department to increase community education presentations on traffic safety, along with helping the department provide better training to officers who respond to traffic violations.
Department officials stated that the grant program will run from now until the end of September 2022.
