The victim of a carjacking was shot at Friday in Anza Friday as deputies closed in on the suspect, who managed to elude them.
According to Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. Mike Heath, patrol deputies were called to the area of Lake Lane and Mitchell Road about 1:30 a.m. to investigate reports that a recent carjacking victim had spotted his vehicle.
Heath said the victim, whose identity was not disclosed, spotted his car while traveling through the area and requested help.
The man directed deputies to where his car had been parked, and shortly after the patrolmen went to find it, the victim encountered the suspect nearby, according to the sergeant.
“The suspect produced a firearm and fired it,” Heath said. “The suspect fled the area immediately after the shooting.”
The victim was not hurt.
The deputies called for additional units, and a perimeter was established to search for the assailant, but an exhaustive search of the area was unsuccessful, according to Heath.
No description of the shooter was available.
Anyone with information was asked to contact the sheriff’s Hemet station at 951-791-3400.
