Five people were said to be in stable condition at hospitals after possibly taking fentanyl, which forced police to close a park in Westminster and call out a hazmat team for a cleanup, authorities said Sunday.
Officers were dispatched at about 5:55 p.m. Saturday to Sigler Park at 7200 Plaza St. in reference to multiple people reportedly down and unresponsive near the restrooms. They found five people unresponsive in the park, according to Sgt. Alan Aoki of the Westminster Police Department.
“Officers deployed Narcan as all subjects exhibited signs of opioid or possible fentanyl overdose,” Aoki said. “Due to the possible fentanyl involvement, Sigler Park was evacuated and blocked off during the response.”
Paramedics rushed the five people to area hospitals, where they were listed in stable condition.
A hazardous materials team and the staff from the Orange County Health Care Agency were sent in to assist with cleanup, Aoki said. No other members of the public were harmed.
“It appears to that this is an isolated incident, and the public is not in danger,” he said. “The circumstances of the possible fentanyl exposure are under investigation.”
