The Los Angeles Police Department went on citywide tactical alert following a “smash-and-grab” robbery at a high-end clothing store in the Melrose area Friday evening.

A large group entered the Bottega Veneta store on Melrose Avenue, near Croft Avenue and the border with West Hollywood, and stole an unknown amount of items before fleeing the scene, KCAL9 reported about 8:20 p.m.

KCAL9 also reported pepper spray was used during the robbery, but the LAPD could not be reached for details.

The LAPD defines a tactical alert as “an announcement of the anticipated redistribution of on-duty officers to achieve personnel levels necessary for controlling an emergency.”
