A suspect who was barricaded for several hours in an apartment in Irvine is in police custody Thursday.

The suspect, who police say was involved in an earlier domestic incident and who was believed to be armed and dangerous, was arrested by Irvine Police Department officers at approximately 2:30 a.m., ending the seven-hour plus standoff.

The suspect was identified as Sergio Garcia, 28, who was booked on suspicion of domestic violence, kidnapping and criminal threats, police said.

According to Irvine police, the suspect engaged in a standoff with police in the 1000 block of Elements Way at approximately 7 p.m. Wednesday. Police used as diversionary device before arresting the suspect.

Residents in the immediate area were evacuated for several hours and surrounding streets were closed until morning.

Police were first called at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday to the address after the victim said Garcia, her live-in boyfriend, attacked her, police said.

While threatening to kill her, he dragged her back toward their apartment when she tried to run away, police alleged. A neighbor who heard her shouts for help intervened, allowing her to get away and call for help with a neighbor’s phone, police said.

When officers arrived, they attempted to arrest him but he ran back into the apartment and standoff began, police said. Two handguns were recovered in the apartment after the arrest.
