Police in Palm Springs urged the public to avoid the 1800 block of North Cerritos Drive Monday evening due to an investigation into an assault with a deadly weapon.

Officers evacuated an apartment building in the area, and a SWAT team was on the scene negotiating with an armed suspect who barricaded inside an apartment, authorities said.

The Palm Springs Police Department tweeted at 6:48 p.m. that the public should “stay indoors until scene cleared by police.”

Police Chief David Mills later said a resident at the apartment building argued with an employee there, allegedly threatening him with a gun and making a remark about his nationality, the Desert Sun reported.
