A multi-vehicle collision in a downtown Palm Springs intersection Monday evening left one person dead and six others in a hospital, with one driver arrested on suspicion of DUI.

The accident occurred at about 5 p.m. Palm Springs Police Department advised the public at 5:40 p.m. to avoid the intersection of North Palm Canyon Drive and Alejo Road as police investigated the crash scene.

“An impaired person driving under the influence collided with three different cars and sent at least seven people to the hospital,” Police Chief Andy Mills told reporters at the scene.

Mills added that one of the seven people was pronounced dead at the hospital, and other person had “major injuries.” He said police had the DUI suspect in custody and were hoping to speak with him.

No further details were immediately available.
