A vehicle smashed into a power pole in Riverside Sunday, killing a 21-year-old motorist.
The crash was reported at 4:58 a.m. at Van Buren Boulevard and Duncan Avenue, according to the Riverside Police Department.
Investigators said a black Kia was traveling north on Van Buren Boulevard when the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to hit a power pole and come to rest in a field just south of Duncan Avenue.
The driver, a Riverside resident who was not named, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said a passenger in the vehicle fled the scene before first responders arrived.
Northbound Van Buren Boulevard was temporarily closed between Challen and Duncan avenues.
