A motorist was injured Monday when his SUV slammed into a tree in Moreno Valley, requiring firefighters to extricate him.

The crash happened about 11:50 a.m. at the intersection of Iris and Ponderosa avenues, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The agency said that multiple engine crews were sent to the location and found the victim, whose identity was not released, trapped inside the wreckage.

Firefighters deployed industrial gear to pry open the damaged SUV and rescue the driver, who was the sole occupant, at 12:15 p.m., according to officials at the scene.

The victim was taken to nearby Riverside University Medical Center for treatment of moderate injuries.

Sheriff’s deputies were investigating the crash.
