Following weeks of testimony, an Orange County Superior Court judge has gutted a case against a radiologist on trial for a $17 million workers’ compensation insurance fraud scheme, according to records obtained Friday.
Dr. Sim Carlisle Hoffman was on trial facing 121 felonies, but on Thursday Orange County Superior Court Judge Richard King dumped all of the counts but one.
Attorneys will make closing arguments on the sole remaining count — fraudulent claim for health benefit. Hoffman faces jail time at worst if convicted.
Hoffman was indicted with two others in 2011, and charges in the case were dismissed in 2013. The case was refiled in 2014. Since then, co-defendant Dr. Thomas Michael Heric died and charges against him were dismissed.
Hoffman, who owned Advanced Professional Imaging, Advanced Management Services and Better Sleeping Medical Center in Buena Park at one point faced 883 counts of insurance fraud.
Hoffman was accused of overbilling insurance companies for overpriced procedures at sleep and nerve testing centers, prosecutors said when the indictment was unsealed.
