An 80-year-old man who was fatally shot at a residence in Encino was identified Thursday as authorities continued their investigation into the killing.

Officers were sent at about 5:25 p.m. Wednesday to a home in the 4500 block of Densmore Avenue on reports of an assault with a deadly weapon, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Stuart Herman of Encino died at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.

A man in his 60s who apparently arrived at the residence while the suspects were still there was pistol-whipped, according to reports from the scene.

Authorities released few details of the investigation into the killing, which was initially characterized as a home invasion. Police said it appears this might not be the first crime committed by the suspects, due to the level of violence.

“No one starts out with this type of behavior, typically,” LAPD Detective Sharon Kim told reporters at the scene.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call 877-LAPD-247.
