A fire that erupted Friday in bushes within a Moreno Valley commercial center damaged a building and led to a second small fire starting in the immediate vicinity.
The main blaze was reported about 4:40 p.m. near the intersection of Alessandro Boulevard and Frederick Street, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
The agency said that multiple engine crews were sent to the location and encountered flames in ornamental bushes planted next to a business.
Crews quickly knocked down the fire, but not before it extended to the building, which was not occupied, according to officials at the scene.
While crews extinguished the first blaze, a second started in grass and bushes nearby, but that one was brought under control in less than five minutes and did not threaten any structures, according to the fire department.
Firefighters forced their way into the building to ensure the flames had not breached the interior, but no evidence of damage inside the edifice was found, officials said.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
