A suspect has been hospitalized Thursday after being shot by a California Highway Patrol officer and it resulted in traffic on a major freeway being stopped for hours.

CHP Officer Elizabeth Kravig confirmed that a CHP officer shot a suspect but did not release further details about the shooting.

Officers responded at approximately 2:50 a.m. to the Skirball Center Drive exit of San Diego (405) Freeway where the shooting occurred.

Television footage showed a red car off to one side of the freeway and CBS 2 reported one person had been taken to a hospital after the shooting.

The shooting closed both the north and southbound of the Dan Diego (405) Freeway, causing a major traffic backup for the morning commute in both directions.

Officials re-opened the northbound lanes at approximately 5 a.m. but the southbound lanes remain closed and an investigation is underway.
