A man was struck by a pickup, suffering life-threatening injuries, when he attempted to cross a Riverside street, authorities said Friday.

The victim, whose identity was not released, was hit about 8:20 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of Blaine Street and Iowa Avenue, roughly three blocks from the UC Riverside campus, according to the Riverside Police Department.

Sgt. Emilio Angulo said that the pedestrian walked onto Iowa just as a 2007 Chevrolet pickup was approaching from the north, heading south.

Angulo said that the victim “crossed in front of the vehicle” and was struck.

It was unclear whether the man was in or near a marked pedestrian crossing.

The pickup driver, identified only as a 20-year-old Moreno Valley resident, wasn’t hurt and immediately stopped to wait for first responders, according to Angulo.

The pedestrian was taken to Riverside Community Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition Friday.

Angulo said that no one was arrested, and the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the police Traffic Bureau at 951-826-8723.
