A 48-year-old man pleaded guilty Monday to charges stemming from a robbery at a Palm Springs business, and was immediately sentenced to three years probation and 120 days behind bars.

Michael Harry Potter of Palm Springs pleaded guilty to felony counts of robbery and resisting or deterring an officer, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

Potter took merchandise without paying from a business in the 500 block of North Palm Canyon Drive on May 3, according to the Palm Springs Police Department.

Police said an employee asked Potter to return the merchandise, but Potter allegedly threatened the employee with a large wooden stick. The worker then went back into the business to contact police.

Officers responded and found Potter with the help of city surveillance footage, police said. When officers came in contact with Potter, he allegedly threatened an officer with the wooden stick.

Police said officers chased Potter on foot until he eventually surrendered and was taken into custody.
